About Us
LifeCare Planning Inc. was established in 1987 to work with families who have a son and/or daughter with a developmental disability, a head injury or a mental illness. LifeCare is a not-for-profit agency, which does not receive government funds, but is dependent on fees for service. The primary goal of LifeCare is to educate and motivate families as to the need for developing a long-term plan for their family member. This may include a Will, a Trust and addressing Guardianship and/or a Durable Power of Attorney. LifeCare will also provide whatever assistance is needed as a family goes through the process. We have learned that these preparations also provide families with Peace of Mind, knowing they have done everything possible to maintain stability in the family member’s life and to assure their quality of life in the future, when the parents/families are no longer able to be the main caregivers. LifeCare normally makes a visit to the family home to ascertain what the family’s expectations are as well as those of the daughter/son/member, if possible. We address what services are or will be needed and how to access them. This allows the family to be more comfortable while discussing a subject that most people are likely to ignore. The appointment can be made at the family’s convenience during the day or in the evening. There will be a fee of $50.00 for an appointment and there will be a charge if ongoing assistance is necessary. At that time we also point out how important it is to develop a Living or Testamentary Trust. We explain how necessary it is to incorporate very specific language, if the family is considering setting aside dollars for the individual and wish to have the person’s eligibility for entitlement funds (e.g. Medicaid) maintained. Referral to a number of attorneys and financial advisors for consultation may occur at this time. When we visit a family it also presents us an opportunity to describe our long-term hands-on component as an Advocate or Trustee/co-Trustee for individuals in the Kansas City metropolitan area. Any one of these components can provide a “comfort zone” for those other family members who have agreed to be involved in the person’s life but have not worked with the “system.” All of this is handled through a Family Assistance Agreement.
